There's a lot of existential angst in Stephen Wachtel's marvelous novel, "Quf-Man." So much so that I hope he expands this universe and continues to develop the characters in future novels. I will certainly buy this author’s future work.Corny as the book’s title may be, it accurately describes a future world where marines are turned into super-soldier cyborg fighting machines who—at the very end of the novel—find themselves in combat against a new race of very intelligent and very powerful beings, the product of the genetic amalgamation of human beings and chimpanzees that started out as a forbidden graduate school experiment. Note to college professors everywhere: keep an eye on your TAs.
The novel bounces between the deeply interesting narrative of the transformation of men into cyborgs and the tragic story of the creation, development, and ultimate ascendancy of the “qumans,” the disturbingly intelligent, frighteningly powerful, and ultimately amoral new species.
In a genre that generally explores the dehumanization of men when melded with machines, “Quf-man” surprises by making the cyborgs the more human of the two competing “supra-human” entities.
Apart from the salting of generally unconvincing whiz-bang action, the author clearly is interested in exploring what it is that makes us human. What is the source of our understanding of right and wrong? Are good and evil relative? There were times when you wanted to go into fan-fiction mode and argue with the author. But reviews are so much nicer….
There are some tedious narrative passages, but Wachtel is at his best when he puts bitter words in the mouth of the “Alpha quman,” the first of the new species, a supremely noble and prideful creature who is painfully aware that his existence is the result of a squirt of graduate-student semen into a petri dish containing a chimpanzee ovum.
The conversion of a man into a cyborg is predictably interesting, though the willingness of a man to be turned into a man/machine is surprisingly without introspection. “Whoa. This is so cool.” You can easily imagine Keanu Reeves getting the part in the movie.
The novel is incomplete. As other reviewers have noted, the ending is abrupt, given the generally masterful establishment of place and character and theme.
That being said, I really, really want to know what comes next. Good job!

QufMan Twentyfourth century geneticists merge the DNA of man and ape eBook Stephen Wachtel Reviews
In the powerfully imagined science fiction novel Quf-Man by Stephen Wachtel PhD we are taken to the planet Maimon in the 23rd century. Maimon is less restrictive about human experimentation and the generation of new species with new technologies including genetics, and cybernetic physiology than planets Earth and Bellaj. Wachtel is eminently qualified to write about these because of his experience as a USAF jet fighter pilot and his very extensive cutting edge background in genetics. He conceives an ensemble of well developed characters who’s actions tell the original story that includes hybrids, cyborgs and androids. Wachtel’s story is also compelling and exciting because of the multitude of viable futuristic technologies he creates and uses to support his general narrative and action sequences.
Quf-Man is the first human hybrid and is first referred to as the Alpha Male and later named Adam Koop. Adam is larger, stronger and more intelligent than his human counterparts, as are all of the human hybrids that came afterward which are named qmans. The Adam character is powerful, quietly menacing and literally jumps off of the page. In 48 years from the creation of Quf-Man qmans have grown in number to tens of thousands and become 35 percent of the total population of planet Maimon.
Jonathan Fels is a less than average person with a police record. He is caught up in a charade where marine intelligence is looking for marine candidates. Fels bravely intervenes to stop a criminal who kills a nun which is highly publicized on TV. He joins the marines after receiving highly suggestive reasons to do so. He joins a conversion program in the marines which through surgery gives him cybernetic physical changes that make him an ultimate fighter increasing his strength and the ability to accelerate his speed beyond normal perception. Fels also receives other internal improvements that give him increased recuperative systems if he is wounded. These changes together with the increased intelligence he receives, make him a super military adversary. He is made into a cyborg and becomes a member of a military force of converted cyborg marines.
Androids and gyndroids (female androids) are sophisticated synthetic organisms that look as real as humans. They have a red dot on their forehead and do not have belly buttons. Wachtel’s narrative is peppered with androids and gyndroids that perform a myriad of functions such as bartenders, barbers medical personel, miners, waitresses. They are even armed with weapons to be security personel, deputies and soldiers.
Mining asteroids is a big part of the economies of planets Earth, Maimon and Bellaj. The action begins as a mining transport is hijacked.
Wachtel’s descriptive narrative draws the reader into the story from beginning to end.
SW has written a SyFy novel of a future Earth when scientist are studying the combining of plant life with animal life. Then one scientist decides to combine the DNA of a Chimpanzee and a human at the egg level. The attempts at first were failures and then they found what they did wrong and made thee correction. Quf-Man. This is an excellent read for the genre.....ER
