Our mistakes as parents become the burden of our children.

"Brilliantly Shocking!" - Shauna Dean

When Ricky was nine years old he murdered his grandma with a shattered bottle of Jack Daniels. Nobody knows why he did it. Not even Ricky.

Forty-two years later and Ricky still believes he is that little boy. The face of the man in the mirror is a stranger he's never known.

Doctors at Pinehurst Mental Hospital, desperate to help Ricky confront the suppressed memories locked away in his fractured mind, perform a radical new therapy to reveal the secrets buried on that fateful night.

But soon they'll come to realize some memories are best left forgotten.

Sins of the Father is a psychological thriller from Anthony Vicino. A heartbreaking short story examining mental health, regret, and redemption. Fans of Edgar Allan Poe's suspense, or Stephen King's unsettling horror mysteries, will love this captivating short story.

INTERVIEW WITH THE AUTHOR

Q What's Sins of the Father about?

A Sins of the Father is part psychological thriller, part horror mystery. Mental health disorders are fertile ground for this type of story because they're something we're all susceptible to at some level. It was a bit scary exloring what it means to be a killer, and how, given the right stimuli, any of us could turn into that monster.

Q Where did you get your inspiration for Sins of the Father?

A Well, I have a degree in psychology which came in handy as I sat down to figure out how I could accurately depict, and incite, the sequence of symptoms the story calls for. All things considered, Sins of the Father is a break from my usual science fiction and fantasy stomping ground. An experiment in something dark, gritty, and loosely inspired by Stephen King. All things told, this is one of my favorite stories because it hit so close to home.

Q What does it mean to you when readers pick up your books?

A It's incredibly humbling. For so long I've slaved away at the keyboard in obscurity. To have my words out in the world being read by fans across the world is a bit surreal. I don't know if I'll ever be a best seller like Hugh Howey, but so far I've met a slew of wonderful people (both readers and fellow authors alike) which has made the whole publishing adventure unforgettable. Thanks to everybody who's taken the time to pick up one of my stories. I can't tell you how much it means to me.

This novelette is a very quick read and has some nice, vivid writing and a couple nice twists to keep you entertained. Although it must be set in the near future, for some reason I kept feeling as if I were reading a story by Edgar Alan Poe, perhaps because of the constant unsettling feeling that I got while reading this, matching the feeling that I get when reading Poe. Mr. Vicino is a talented writer and I look forward to reading more of his work.

Sins of the Father A Short Story eBook Anthony Vicino Reviews

The human mind is a complicated thing. What we remember isn't always what happened. Horrible events may cause the mind to shut down and alter the memories of unbearable guilt.

This short novella will keep you reading. You'll want to see what this new method of memory recovery will reveal.

I got this story for free together with two others for subscribing to the author's newsletter on his (very interesting) blog.
Quite a twisty, topsy turvy story. You know there's a twist coming, some revelation that will just blow your mind and then bam! there it is. Nicely done. My only complaint is the character name for Reynolds, he's identified by Reynolds and Rey but at one point the doctor calls him Wilson and then Harri.
Anthony Vicino is definitely an outstanding artist. His ability to paint into his words not only the idea he is conveying, but the smells, the textures, the temperatures of the area is rarely done so well I am not made aware of the effort behind the skill yet he seemed to effortless pull it off, much to my delight. A definite talent in it's own right, rare to see in a lot of Indie books, even 'the great and most popular ones'.

Though this book, "Sins of the Father", is most assuredly written to be able to be a short, very intense read, I chose, instead, to linger on various sections, absorbed in the details and in the visualizations this book created so cleverly. I genuinely found I did not wish for the ending to arrive when it did. This is no comment on it being shorted; no, it is perfectly created.

Of special interest to me were the sections wherein the characters had head injuries and the ensuing results, the anxiety attacks Mr. Vicino very effectively defined without being as if from a clinically written textbook but making the reader able to 'feel' an inside view, and other various forms of the particles of psychology which were included.

The description on the book's sale page do not do not do it justice. That it is a mere 'sixty-six pages' feels misleading to me; I found myself setting it down to jump up and tell my companion what had 'happened', so immersed in the story I became a part of it, and it a part of me. The people within MATTERED to me, I cared what was about to happen and what had already happened in their lives and had to share it with someone, to process it in the sharing.

That it is about the affects of a child's mental illness is disclosed in the beginning pages, but Mr. Vicino has also cleverly crafted an unknown mystery within the mystery... one that he pulls off so effectively that I quite truly and literally 'never saw it coming' before it reached out and GRABBED me, rattling my core, during the last two and three pages of this tragic tale.

His artistic talents made good use the spacing available in form to use his own unique form of tropes to convey missing pieces of time in the memory of "Paxton", the father of this story. Chapters Nine, Ten and Eleven being titled "Untitled" and left blank, then Chapter Twelve being titled "Chapter Nine" further emphasizes this quote at the beginning of Chapter Twelve from the book I'll share "Time stopped moving at any sort of recognizable interval as the silence stretched." That each chapter began at the bottom half of the page I now recognize to be no mistake, no formatting problem, but rather a clever use of the author to further create the feel he intended, that of fugue in Paxton, and later shown, in his son as he had become imprisoned within his own mind and stuck in a warp of the brain for decades.

Full of surprises and cleverly well done, I highly recommend this book and this author. It can be enjoyed by anyone who is able to see a higher quality wordsmith than generally may be found among ebooks of today at work... or in any form for that matter. Not for the simple-minded, though, or someone who wishes everything to be cut and dried in cookie-cutter form. While many will surely see the cleverness, one must look a bit deeper into the mystery to see just how ingeniously this short story is in it's creation. The first of Mr. Vicino I had seen was in a short story located is in a rather well known analogy titled "The Time Travel Chronicles" The Time Travel Chronicles (The Future Chronicles), titled "Extant", which caused me to seek out more of his works.

I received this copy, along with two other books, as a gift when joining Anthony Vicino's newsletter, which is located on his author's page. It was a gift, nothing was ever expected for the giving of it. No emails were forthcoming asking for reviews in exchange for the gift of the books, he portrayed the definition of a gentleman. It is my pleasure to write this review, although, admittedly, I'll state it wasn't easy. The story is truly complicated, yet will be easy to follow and understand for most adults and even more 'advanced' teenagers.

As an aside I have an extensive background in psychology and social sciences; various aspects of mental illness have intrigued me since my mother gave me my first college text books when I was around age fourteen then bombed me with box loads of them at age fifteen. I was hooked. I began volunteering, with her permission, at a very young teenage time in my life at area hospitals. I have done work as well as volunteered not only in many areas but in various fields, including abnormal psychology, etc. The details listed in this book are spot on, and the technique described is not truly all that futuristic. It's methods have been employed for a long time and the machine spoken of has been 'in the works' for quite some time, hopefully one day very soon to be a reality available to help in diagnosing and treating mental health patients. It's been a few years since I was working, my information may be outdated, they may have already developed a test model, 'somewhere' as is described herein. I hope so.
This is an impressive little book. It's short, but emotionnally dense. In a true novella style, the author manages to bring us steadily to a striking climax.

Writting style is simple and elegant. The story flows easily. There is a bunch of small details (yet not too much, there is no time lost in description) that help with setting the mood and decor of the story. And they all bring us to the conclusion, that is both suprising and yet you feel that it couldn't have ended otherwise.

Despite the few editorial mistakes (especially noteworthy ones are the three blank chapters at the middle of the story), I find this novella a success and I'll happily dig into this author's other stories.

Disclaimer I received this book from the author in exchange for my honest review.
This is a review of Sins of the Father, purchased through the app for iPhone.

Initially I thought that this book was not very good at being a book. I tried pressing flowers between its pages, as my mama taught me to do with books back when I was just a little girl. But this book turned out to be completely incapable of flattening my flowers. Next I tried hollowing the book out to make a secret hiding spot for my drugs and my diamonds. Once again, this book failed miserably; it was far too skinny to hide anything of value, and now the iPhone I have it loaded on is acting all kinds of broken. As a last resort I decided to try reading all those words that were written on the pages, and that's when it all kinda clicked in my brain. As I got sucked into the storyline I was all like "Wait a minute...", then I was all like "What!!!", then lastly it hit me with a load of "Whoa." Once I started turning the pages of Sins of the Father, I could not put it down.

Bravo sir, and I look forward to being just as caught up in your next book. Which I will of course be buying... as soon as you replace my busted iPhone.
Fast paced, kept my interest. I will read more bye his author. Cool idea on memory retrieval..kind of similar t the movie The Cutter in its futuristic technology .
A great psych thriller. Vicino does a good job of giving you just enough to keep wanting more, all the way until that last line that ends on a great twist. Beginning reminded me of Shutter Island, but this takes on a life of its own. You'll especially love the title upon completion. Highly recommended
