Maelstrom Destroyermen Taylor Anderson 9780451462824 Books

I was hesitant at first to give the series it's due, due to similarities to the Lost Regiment series by William Forstchen. After the third book I am happy to report that Taylor has taken this concept in his own , very entertaining direction . The characters are well fleshed out and engaging, and the battle sequences keep you on the edge of your seat . I find myself at the end of each book wanting more ; and isn't that the touchstone of good writing , anyway ? Good luck, Taylor . Please keep them coming !

Maelstrom Destroyermen Taylor Anderson 9780451462824 Books Reviews

I really like this series. As a veteran of 27 years of naval service I can relate to much of the shipboard actions. I somehow didn't get this audiobook so am very pleased to finally receive it. Looking forward to more stories. The audio books are of excellent quality and a really good bargain for any body that likes naval action and fiction stories..
Mr. Anderson's climactic Naval action novel reads like something from the newsreels of 1942. Implacable, ferocious enemy; desperate and reeling protagonists; a fragile yet resilient alliance. He's clearly done his research and it shows in the sharp focus on the Naval vessels and their dauntless crews - while it seems he hasn't spent too much time among giant lemurs*, leading to a slightly softer focus on the ships' furry allies. He's careful to not commit the sin of anachronistic hindsight too much - but lets his characters learn the lessons of the shortcomings of their outmoded or incompetently designed equipment (Mk 14 torpedo) as part of the story.

His characters are fully fleshed out and grow along with the story - and in many instances he uses the stereotypes (e.g., Chief Gray) as to both poke fun at the stereotypes and as launching point to let the character develop in the new environment and strangely similar war. And in keeping with the different cultural climate of the 1940's, the few romantic relationships are handled with restraint and decorum - even Gunner's Mate Silva gets a PG rating.

If you've read accounts of the surface actions in the early days of WW-II, you'll see the resonances here, and of course, the nearly quixotic Battle of Samar echoes as the hopelessly outgunned and over-matched small boys of TF-77.4.3 (aka Taffy-3) took on a vastly superior Japanese battle group to protect the landing beaches at Leyte Gulf, except of course with the USS Walker and USS Mahan filling in the roles of destroyers and the Lemurian's SalissaHome filling in for the "baby flattops" of Taffy 3

I greatly enjoyed this trilogy and see here on that he's started a new series, which I look forward to reading.

BRAVO ZULU!

*considering they've been extinct for 2000 years, he gets a bye on that one
Captain Matthew Reddy and the crew of the USS Walker have been living in their alternate world for a little over a year. However, they are not alone, for the Japanese battlecruiser Amagi has followed them through the mysterious storm. Plus, the Amagi is under the control of the Griks; the lizard-like creatures Reddy and his crew have been fighting.

Realizing the need for reinforcements, Reddy steams for Manila in hopes of recruiting more members to the cause. But, that leaves the Lemurians and remaining humans open to attack from the Japanese and Grik. Although Amagi had been damaged earlier, she has been repaired sufficiently to rejoin the attack. But Reddy may have an ace up his sleeve. There have been rumors of an "iron fish"; a submarine that was transported through the same storm as Walker was. To add this ship to Walker would give the Americans and Lemurians a distinct advantage over the Grik, but is it true? Further, are there other people in this world besides the Americans and Japanese? As Walker steams to the Philippines, the Grik have made plans for a massive assault on the Lemurians at Baalkpan. Will the Grik succeed, or will Reddy and USS Walker return in time?

I've grown to really enjoy the "Destroyermen" series, and with each book, the story gets better. Taylor Anderson has created an exciting alternate world full of unique creatures and thrilling battles. The character development has been especially good, and it's easy to root for Reddy and his crew against the evil Grik.

I recommend "Maelstrom" and the other books in this series very highly. Science fiction fans will really enjoy "Destroyermen".
Don’t be misled into buying duplicate volumes! It is important to realize that the book clubs have picked up on this popular series and are issuing the successive volumes in double volumes. You can get these on the secondary book market, either here on or on EBay.
1. Unknown Seas combines v. 1 & 2
2. Fire on the Water combines v. 3 & 4
3. Rising Storm combines v. 5 & 6.
4. Iron and Fire Combines v. 7 & 8.
The first four volumes are pretty much concentrated on one major confrontation, but by volume 5, Rising Tides, the story begins to splinter into several battlefronts, and we begin to lose many of the secondary characters near and dear to our hero Matt Reddy.
Taylor Anderson is a pro author. He's up there with the likes of David Weber or S M Stirling. This is 3rd in a series of, so far, 10 novels about the WW2 destroyer crews lost & transported to an entirely different world which contains humans as well as two other sentient species. The crews and their stalwart leader quickly have become embroiled in the war between the 2 species. Anderson continues to develop a vast array of characters and his "aliens" are unique and fully drawn characters not zombie cardboard cutouts for target shooting. Anderson also knows his stuff. If you read the history of this class of destroyers he's got it all down. His writing is, in some ways, a salute to the "greatest generation" of mariners.
You really need to start at the beginning. Even if not a SF reader you may find the story worth it.
