Eddington's The Mathematical Theory of Relativity is arguably the first comprehensive treatise on the mathematical and physical foundations of general relativity. As Prof. Ashtekar explained it in his excellent and informative Foreword "it is comprehensive on three fronts Eddington systematically introduces the tools of differential geometry, explains the (then known) physical consequences of the theory with admirable clarity, and discusses in detail the conceptual underpinning of general relativity." The new publication of Eddington's book is justified not only by its historical value, but also by the fact that it still provides an original and detailed introduction to the deep physical ideas of general relativity and its mathematical formalism, whose "treatment throughout the monograph is clear, sharp and at the same time pedagogical" (from the Foreword). Eddington's enlightening exposition of general relativity "carries interesting lessons for contemporary researchers in gravitational science at all stages of their career. It is therefore fortunate that the Minkowski Institute Press is making this historic monograph easily available once again" (from the Foreword). NOTE This book is not a re-publication of the scanned pages of the original publication; the text has been typeset in LaTeX.

The Mathematical Theory of Relativity Arthur S Eddington Vesselin Petkov 9781927763360 Books Reviews
The Mathematical Theory of Relativity by Arthur Stanley Eddington M.A., M.Sc., F.R.S. is it math, magic, madness or mendacity of the highest order? Starting at the very beginning F.R.S. stands for Fellow of the Royal Society. So it’s fitting that this book is a royal pain in the . . . .
Certified mathematic-phobes should buy the book just to check out page 91 (that’s section 41 “The Deflection of Light”) where the mass of the sun is given as 1.47 kilometers. It difficult to decide which is more bizarre that the mass of the sun is measured in kilometers or that when the sun’s mass is measured in kilometers it’s only 1.47 of them. Mathematic-phobes should try to get a mathematic-phile friend to try to explain that peculiarity to them. Then, when their explanation is in mid-spiel they should start yelling, “You’re lying! You’re always lying!” in an accent that would make everyone but Hillary Clinton wince.
Every mathematic-phile should buy the book to check out pages 59-60 (that’s section 28 “Equation of a Geodesic”). This is a tour de force where Eddington uses a variation on the proof of the calculus of variations version the Euler equation to produce the four equations determining a geodesic. If the proof of the calculus of variations version of the Euler equation is your cup of tea this will make your day.
I’m trying to popularize a phrase that I hope Hillary Clinton will use in her campaign It takes a new brush to really clean the toilet bowl. With that in mind, check out the revised edition of my free eBook Nuts & Bolts Taking Apart Special Relativity at lulu.com/spotlight/spinman. In the revised edition I analyze in depth every equation and statement in section 40 “The Advance of the Perihelion,” and I reach the conclusion that it is a fabrication.
I got the ebook from the publisher’s site yesterday and was surprised to read the reviews here.... until I saw the time they were written - those reviews are NOT for this book. "The Mathematical Theory of Relativity" published on December 19, 2016 seems to be a very important book (see Description) by a man who writes well for the general public; I have read two of his less advanced and very interesting books.
There can't be less than 5 stars for a book on relativity, written by Eddington...
Some readers may find it very, I mean very, mathematical... But hey, that's what the title says and what Eddington just does.
The difficulties that a reader may encounter are not so much due to Eddington's way of using tensors -- which is the old/classic way -- but are mainly due to to
1. The extensive prerequisites such as mechanics, electrodynamics, electromagnetism...
2. The very dense proofs, where lots of steps are assumed known to the reader or easy to guess...
On the other hand, Eddington does a real effort at explaining the basic concepts and their interconnections as he theory unfolds, i.e. the WHAT, the WHY, the HOW and the WHAT IF... And that is so rare that it must be mentioned.
As a beautiful introduction to this book, I suggest Eddington's "Gravitation", i.e. "Space, Time and Gravitation", which are the same.
For a complete review of relativity books, see my comment on Einstein's "The Principle of Relativity".
This is an absolutely atrocious edition. The equations are not typeset. Do not waste your time. In short if you do not understand math, this is the edition for you.
Just got the book today--it's a ripoff! The "math" is simply unreadable--a bunch of incoherent symbols. Clearly, whoever produced this edition knows no math nor any physics. I am sending the book back. It's simply crap!
I should take the first reviewer more seriously before buying this book. Since he received such a negative feedback, I thought - here we have another one who can't understand math. Well, there is not a single looking math equation in this book, all equations are gibberish. I'm quite familiar with General Relativity and have most of the essential books, and saw all kind of weird equations in my life, but have never seen equations like
O Afly 0X V y Ooxfjy O nx j
and the rest is about the same. I feel awkward to give a single star (should get zero) to a great classic book by Sir Arthur Eddington, but it is not for the book, it is for the abuse of , or the publisher called - General Books. I think however that I understand the problem - there are two printouts; the other is by Cambridge University Press (four times more expensive), and its typesetting via 's Look Inside looks fine. I bet that it worth five stars. So again, I'm referring to General Books edition, not to Eddington's book in general.
(and I apologize for possible typos in my review; I've just received this book and I'm mad as hell seeing the abuse of a such an important work).
Excellent book with a fair price. The author approaches the subject in a complete way. That's an indispensable book for all Mathematics and Physics students.
Great book.
